Our History

New Jersey Family & Matrimonial Law Firm

Firm Overview

There’s something unique about a law firm, or any company for that matter, where one of the initial tasks of the founding partners was to set down their operating principles and a mission statement. There’s also something particularly telling about a firm that begins its list of principles by stating: “We distinguish ourselves by satisfying our clients with great caring service and developing strong client relationships. Therefore, we try our best to respond to client inquiries the same day when possible.” These concepts became the foundation for a new matrimonial law firm.

When Lizanne J. Ceconi and Cary Cheifetz founded their firm in 1999, there were just three attorneys and an eye toward growing a firm that could focus on servicing client needs that balance individualized attention with a team approach. Ceconi wanted to take the advantage of “ depth and offer differing levels of experience and expertise so that clients are provided with really good service without feeling like they are being thrown to the masses.” Lawyers at the firm actively participate in various local, state and national family law organizations as well as write and lecture on family law topics. With that expertise, says Cheifetz, “you can offer diversity, without it being a place where you don’t know who’s going to return your call. You can still provide personal service.”

This leads to operating principle number 2: “Our staff is our most important resource and the backbone of our success. We select, train, develop, and motivate each person to be the best. If our staff is successful, we are successful. We are a team, and we support each other and work together to achieve common goals.” The result, says Ceconi, is that they can draw on the expertise and experience of all in the firm when necessary. “This is all about what’s best for the client, not what’s best for an individual attorney.”

For a matrimonial lawyer, evaluating the client’s situation and helping them achieve their goals during a stressful period, and help them get on their feet again is an important goal, which points to operating principle number 5: “We communicate leadership, vision, strategies, goals, and ideas.” An attorney who exhibits these traits is invaluable. “We try to come up with creative solutions and to help them prioritize,” says Cheifetz. “I think one of the most important things is helping a client decide what they really want, and then we figure out how to get that for them.”

With the nature of how lawyers practice changing, the firm of Ceconi & Cheifetz, LLC joined Javerbaum Wurgaft Hicks Kahn Wikstrom & Sinins P.C. effective January 1, 2023 to continue meeting its client family law and ancillary needs because arriving at a satisfactory end result may necessitate the use of outside experts such as family therapists, real-estate appraisers, accountants, and firms that do business evaluations. And whenever necessary, our lawyers can turn to a well-considered roster of professionals as well as a complement of lawyers from complementary practice areas within the Javerbaum Wurgaft platform.

In all its years, our attorneys have developed a reputation for being honest, respectful, and effective, but it is the final paragraphs of the firm’s mission statement that truly explained the reasons for its success. As Ceconi notes, “this is “our personal commitment to our client. That commitment is a pledge to counsel, to educate, and to work together to achieve realistic goals and objectives. We want to make a difference in each client’s life.”
It’s an approach that works and has stood the test of time.

Ceconi & Cheifetz History

New Jersey Family & Matrimonial Law Firm

In 1999, Cary B. Cheifetz and Lizanne J. Ceconi joined forces to form the matrimonial law firm of Ceconi & Cheifetz, LLC. Prior to forming the firm, Mr. Cheifetz had been a partner with Skoloff & Wolfe, P.C. and Ms. Ceconi had been a sole practitioner, both specializing in family law in New Jersey. The founding partners shared a vision for the creation of a New Jersey family law firm that would provide quality legal services in a casual, yet professional environment.

The firm began with three family law attorneys, including the two founding partners and an associate. Since 1999, the firm has now grown to four partners and seven New Jersey family and matrimonial law attorneys with varying levels of experience. Kimberly A Rennie was named Partner in 2010 and Nancy C. Richmond was named Partner in 2018. All attorneys are dedicated to the practice of family law as evidenced by their commitment to various family law organizations and non-profit organizations in New Jersey, participation in the Inns of Court, frequent lecturing at family law seminars, among other activities.

Ceconi & Cheifetz, LLC has built an outstanding reputation in the practice of family law throughout the State, primarily in Northern and Central New Jersey over twenty years.
